Upcoming Swims
Summer is officially here and
so is the Long Course and Open Water Swimming season. Check out the list below
to see what’s coming. More information
on all these swims can be found at www.pacificmasters.org or take a look at your copy of USMS Swimmer magazine for
more details.
August 7 Donner Lake Swim
August 11-14 USMS National Long

Trans-Tahoe Relay
With the sun rising in the
east and the moon setting in the west the 29th Annual Trans-Tahoe
swim began on Saturday morning July 23rd. With 125 teams entered,
this was the largest field in race history. The water temperature was a lovely
68° throughout most of the race. TAM
sent two teams this year.
TAM TOO
included Jon Haveman, Geoff Spellberg, Jim Tull, Anne Claman, Mary Ann Stich
and Teresa Schaeffer-Owen. Jon, although
a rookie, swam an inspired first leg setting the tone for the rest of the
team. Geoff, also a rookie, rose to the
occasion by swimming a blistering final leg and bringing the team home in 5
hours (60th place). Jim was able to get us a beautiful boat and a
skilled captain who gave us a clean line to the finish. Anne, Mary Ann and
Teresa were simply awesome!
TAM Good Time was comprised of Doug "El
Capitan" Erickson, Joel "The Young Buck" Orloff,
Arun "I Was Abducted" Burrell, Cindy
"The Veteran" Clements, Shannon
"The Rocket" Wolford, Michele "Go That Way" Robinson
& Joe "Lead Off" Delaney. Rumor has it we finished
somewhere around 35th with a time around 4:28:00.
We were a little off last year’s time but that seemed to be a common yet
difficult to understand phenomena among many teams. Personally, I am
starting to believe Arun's claim that he was abducted
by aliens during his swim.
Nancy Ridout
and Andy Mascheroni also participated.
It is never too early to think about doing the 30th Annual
Trans- Tahoe Swim next year! Come join
the fun!
PMS LC Championships at U.C. Santa Cruz
Ten TAM swimmers competed in
the PMS LC Championships last month at UCSC.
The highlight of the meet’s individual performances was Bea’s personal
best time in the 200 free. Imagine
celebrating your eightieth birthday with a PR!
Two of our relays also set records.
The 240+ mixed 200m Medley Relay of Rich, Ken, Laura, and Nancy set the world record with a time of
2:16.11. And our 240+ mixed 400m Free
Relay of Ed, Rich, Laura, and Nancy set the American record with a time of 4:41.62. Rich and Ed tied for highpoint in the 60-64
age group.
Other good times were turned in by Judy, Gary, Robbie and Walter.
We were blessed with perfect
weather. Put this event on your calendar
for next year. It is a great venue, and
a good opportunity to race in the long course pool. With the World Championships at Stanford next
August, this meet will be a great warm-up for that event.
August Swim Schedule
Please take a look at your
August schedule and find time to help cover pool duties while Coach Marie is on
vacation. She will be gone August 13th to September 2nd.
People are needed to open, close and take care of the pool maintenance while
she takes a well-deserved vacation.
Please check the Bulletin Board for sign-ups. The only way the pool
stays open is if we all help. Thanks in
advance.
Summer and Fall Parking
Teacher workdays begin the
week of August 15th-19th; cars must be off campus by 8:00am that week. The fall semester
begins on August 22. Please park off
campus after this date!
Practice schedules
Please note that Saturday
practices will begin at 7:30
until further notice. While Marie is away there might be some changes in the
schedule so be sure and check the whiteboard for updates.
Memorial Service
There will be a memorial service for George Cunningham Tuesday, August 9th.
A longtime Masters swimmer, George swam with TAM for years before moving to Felton and starting the Santa Cruz Masters program. The service will take place on Tuesday, August 9th,
2pm, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Mountain View. From 880 take 237 to
Cuesta
and go to Grant Road.
The church is on the right.
